I am part of a private community of photography-enthusiasts consisting of people who have travelled with us on photography tours. It is usually abuzz with some interesting images, events or topics of discussion related to photography. In the last week the focus of discussion was on making Black and White images, and the subject of some B&W experiments were images from a recent photography trip to Varanasi. I raised a few thoughts in the discussion, and thought it is worth sharing those points here.

I see a lot of considerations that would have go into making an image BW. Some of them here, according to me –
1. If the colour brings life to an image–it does to many images–it is perhaps best left with colour. Images of shining earthen lamps that create a warm glow, for example..
2. If the colour is a distraction–it often can be in intense portraits and many other situations–perhaps it is best to get rid of it.
3. In many occasions, colour images loose the shine in high-contrast or challenging lighting situations. But as luck would have it, these are situations that work very well for BW images.
4. Making BW is not just desaturating. It requires very careful consideration of available tonalities, colour channels and contrast and subsequently identifying and enhancing the subject/story. A BW image can be really brought to life with good quality processing. And this is the reason why most professionals during BW film days used to develop their own images, to have full control over final results.
And most importantly, it is worth planning your shoot with the end in mind (that is, final processed BW/colour image). This is something that even Ansel Adams had proposed strongly (in shooting BW film).

Sometimes, being open to possibilities lets you discover (and photograph) a whole new world that you would have otherwise missed by a whisker. We often travel in search of beauty, staying alert to see and capture new places and cultures. But more often than not, we tread the beaten path as we follow guidebooks, accept itineraries or simply go by what is well-known.

About a month ago, a Tuk Tuk driver in Battambang, Cambodia, invited me to try out something else. He said, “let’s go on a small adventure; I will take you to the rural interiors and we will visit families practicing traditional occupations for a very long time”. I wasn’t really prepared for this. When someone stranger, whose credentials are unknown to you makes such offer, you are more likely to decline than accept. For some reason, my sixth sense said ‘let us go,’ and I agreed to his idea. What I saw and experienced next day with the Tuk Tuk driver was just the kind of things I was looking for, but never knew whom to ask.

When I started as a photography enthusiast more than a decade ago, the subjects that interested me most were landscapes. I used to spend a lot of time travelling in forests, hilly regions and around water bodies, trying to freeze the beauty of the earth with my camera. Over the years, my photography expanded and evolved in several genres including people photography, architecture photography and commercial work. Yet, photographing landscapes continued to be something that I still cherished.

My last attempt in photographing landscapes was in July-August months at Lahaul & Spiti, a mountainous region in the northern parts of Himachal Pradesh. It is a highland between the Tibetan plateau and the Indian Himalayas, where the altitude is always above ten thousand feet. Its landscapes, comprising fast-flowing rivers, snowy peaks, a few calm lakes and high passes form a great recipe for photography. During the early summer months, tiny flowers bloom and carpet the slope, adding colour to the already beautiful landscape.
