Man of the forest
Atul Joshi writes on Nature Conservation Foundation’s blog about the interesting story of a man who refused to move out of the forest. Shamaro continued to live in Koyana Wildlife Sanctuary even after everyone including his children left the place. After living in the forest all his life, he knows the sanctuary so well that even forest department goes to him for help. The post also has some beautiful pictures of the sanctuary.
My interest too was aroused. Slowly, I started gathering information about Shamrao. For over sixty years, this man was living here, roaming around the densely vegetated Koyana valley. In the sixty’s the Koyana dam was built. The tiny human settlements in this valley were rehabilitated. But this man didn’t go. In 1985, this valley was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary; but he refused to go elsewhere and stayed back alone with his wife and children.
